Coco Gauff’s serve now has an Andy Roddick touch

Does anyone remember Jenson Brooksby? No? This was the young man who shook up the tennis scene a few years ago with his unconventional tennis in the style of Florian Mayer. But he didn’t spread fear or terror with his serve. And so Andy Roddick offered his compatriot Brooksby to come to Charlotte for two days, then this problem would be solved.

Because if Andy Roddick was known for one thing – besides his forehand and great mouth – it was his serve. Above all, it was the service that led the still only 41-year-old to the top of the world rankings and the US Open title in 2003. Roddick’s resignation came much earlier than that of his age-mate Roger Federer – since the end of his career he has been working as a part-time TV expert. And as a good advisor.

Gauff works with Roddick in Charlotte

Coco Gauff sought and found this advice during the off-season. It can be assumed that it was through the intervention of her coach Brad Gilbert. “It was cool. “He’s a really relaxed guy,” said Gauff after her effortless opening win against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova at the Australian Open. “I’ve met him before, but never at this level. I flew to Charlotte for two days. It was two really good days. I think my serve has gotten better.”

However, the initiative did not come from her, Gauff continued. “He’s probably one of the best servers in history, especially on the American side. So I don’t think I could choose anyone… although, I didn’t actually choose, he offered it. So there was no one who could have helped me better with the serve.”

By the way, Jenson Brooksby probably never accepted Roddick’s offer. And he has other worries at the moment anyway: after missing three doping tests, the American has to take a break for 18 months.
