Coco Gauff Qualifies for Round of 16 at Roland-Garros with Victory over Mirra Andreeva

This Saturday on the Suzanne-Lenglen court at Roland-Garros, Coco Gauff, 19, faced Mirra Andreeva, 16. A great breath of fresh air in Paris. This is the first time since Roland-Garros 1997 that such a young confrontation has taken place at this stage of the Porte d’Auteuil competition.

And it was the American, seeded n°6, who qualified for the round of 16 of the Parisian Grand Slam by dismissing the Russian, from qualifying, in three sets (6-7 [5]6-1, 6-1) in Paris, Saturday midday.

But Coco Gauff suffered during a set against the 16-year-old player who was playing her first Grand Slam tournament at Roland-Garros. The American was broken first before finally managing to reverse the trend. But when serving for the win of the first set at 5-4, his arm tensed.

In the tie-break, Mirra Andreeva managed to better manage the important points to take the lead for her first Grand Slam third round. But in the next two sets, Coco Gauff made her experience speak and left her opponent only two short games.

Coco Gauff, 6th player in the world at the WTA, will face the winner of the upcoming match between the Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and the American qualifier Kayla Day in the round of 16 of the Porte d’Auteuil tournament.

In the previous rounds of the Porte d’Auteuil tournament, the 19-year-old American had won against the Spaniard Rebeka Masarova (3-6, 6-1, 6-2), and had clearly dominated the Austrian Julia Grabher (6-2, 6-3).

Andreeva, 143rd in the world at the WTA, had beaten the American Alison Riske-Amritraj without being worried by the score (6-2, 6-1), and the French wild card Diane Parry (6-1, 6-2).
