Nineteen-year-old American Coco Gauff defeated Maria Sakkari 6:2, 6:4 in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Beijing after a superb performance, extending her record streak to 16 wins.
No tennis player has won more in a row this season on the WTA Tour. After the defeat, the Greek player lost the chance to qualify for the Tournament of Champions, which, on the contrary, increased the hopes of the Czech duo Karolína Muchová and Markéta Vondroušová to start in Cancun.
They turned into certainty of participation after Jelena Ostapenko failed to win the duel with Ljudmila Samsovova. Not even the Latvian can get enough points in the remaining WTA tournaments in the season to overtake the Czech representatives in this year’s ranking for qualification to the prestigious competition.
Third-seeded Gauff last lost in early August in Montreal, then won the tournament in Cincinnati after beating Muchova in the final and then won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Now even Sakkariová, who celebrated winning the trophy in Guadalajara two weeks ago, couldn’t find the recipe for it. The tournament number six of the hot American lost in 80 minutes.
The former world number one Iga Šwiateková will face Gauff next. The second-seeded Pole did not use a set point against Caroline Garcia, but in the end she defeated the Frenchwoman after a three-set battle 6:7, 7:6, 6:1.
Sakkariová needed to win at least the semifinals in Beijing to maintain her hopes for the Tournament of Champions. Now he can only hope to start as a substitute.
Wimbledon champion Vondroušová is ranked sixth in the Singles Race, Roland Garros finalist Muchová is seventh. Uns Džábirová from Tunisia holds the last qualifying eighth place.
In doubles, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková have a certain start at the Tournament of Champions.
