Coby is Garp’s heir and a hiatus from the anime. Review of episode 1122 / Movies and TV series / iXBT Live

Brief thoughts on episode 1122 of the One Piece anime.

On Sunday, October 13, after another week, a new, already 1122 episode of the One Piece anime was released. Here we will be shown the results of Coby’s training and we will say goodbye to Garp and… to anime.

The episode is based on chapter 1087 of the original manga. It consists of 14 pages, including 3 double spreads.

The episode begins with a flashback of Kobe. While on the island of Amazon Lilly, he offers himself to the yonko Blackbeard instead of many other Marines, to which Teach agrees. Here the anime added a lot of cool effects, making this moment a little deeper.

What follows is an even older flashback where Garp is giving his lecture. The Vice Admiral poses the classic puzzle of who needs to be saved and who needs to be sacrificed when space on the boat is limited. Koby offers to sacrifice himself, to which Garp is indignant: “you need to save the young!”

By the way, in the anime these flashbacks were swapped. In the original, first there was a scene with Garp’s problem and then the surrender to Kobe Teach.

We are then brought back to the present, where a prone Garp proposes a plan: Coby will destroy Avalo Pizarro’s huge arm, Helmeppo will cover him, and Groose will protect the ship from the wreckage.

While the trio went on their mission, Garp himself rose up and delivered a powerful blow to Pizarro, which split the latter’s stone head. Aokiji tried to stop his former teacher, but to no avail.

Here they cut out the moment where ordinary pirates are shocked by the strength of the patrol hero: “Did he just hit him with his fist?!” It’s a pity, I laughed.

They immediately give us another flashback. It turns out that Kobe trained excessively because he considered himself not talented enough. I remember Rock Lee from Naruto – no talent, but the wildest ability to work and, as a result, gigantic strength.

Further, a significant portion of the remaining running time of the episode is devoted to Kobe doubting himself, but overcoming these doubts. I should note that the animators tried to add drama here. They even partially succeeded, but it still feels like they overdid it. If this scene were a little more concise, it would be cooler. Although the moment where scenes from old episodes were thrown at us in a collage was very lamp.

Well, as a result, Kobe destroys Pizarro’s hand with one powerful blow in the style of Garp himself – everyone is in shock. Of course, this does not mean that he has now become equal to the vice admiral himself, but… now at least it is clear what power he has and how he will fight. Well, it became very obvious that Kobe would play an important role in the ending of the entire “One Piece”. Perhaps Luffy and Coby will team up like Garp and Roger once teamed up. Or vice versa, they will fight.

The episode ends with a scene of congratulations to Coby and farewell to Garp – the old man was caught by Teach’s henchmen and frozen. As befits most “Dis,” he greeted his supposed death with laughter. Although, it’s unlikely that he died – he’s not the level of a character to be dumped like that.

Here I want to draw attention to Aokiji’s face. It is clear that it is very painful for him to do all this. He knows that although he won, he betrayed his ideals and his teacher. And his victory was achieved solely thanks to numerical superiority and Shiryu’s crude trick. In general, it feels like at this moment he is experiencing all possible negative emotions at the same time.

Well, here we are also reminded that Garp always said: “take the child and leave the old man” – which is what they did. Who knew that this would later apply to himself. The music at this point is heartbreaking.

This is where One Piece ends. Kidding. But not really. Next, we will have a six-month break – instead of broadcasting new episodes, we will be shown a remaster of the “Fish-Man Island” arc. They will improve the art, create a more dynamic narrative – there will be almost half as many episodes – and so on. Apparently, the animators heard my bombardment regarding the frequent breaks in the anime and decided to stop. I haven’t decided yet whether it’s worth reviewing the remaster episodes.

Well, episode 1122 came out very good. A little drawn out in a couple of moments, but very emotional. Coby makes him proud, Aokiji feels bad, and Garp… well, he’s the same as he’s always been. Let’s wait for the continuation.
