Coating on tongue: – Opened mouth

It’s in the medical journal Journal of the American Medical Association that three doctors describe the very special condition.

An Indian man visited the Amanza Skin Clinic in Kerala, India, after his tongue had changed considerably.

– It had a thick, black layer on it, and was yellowish in the middle, the doctors write, and continue:

– It was thin, elongated, black fibers that made it look like a hairy surface.

Ate purees after strokes

The man said that he had received a blow three months in advance which caused him to become limp on the left side of his body.

Since then, his diet had consisted of various purees and liquid nutrients.

The doctors believe this was the reason why he was diagnosed with Lingua villosa nigra.

The condition is according to the renowned research journal The Lancet often called Black Hairy Tongue Syndrome (BHT).

Dead skin cells and bacteria

BHT is due according to Lommelegen overgrowth of fungi and bacteria in the oral cavity.

What looks like black hair are in fact tongue papules that have been lengthened by the fungus and bacteria.

As the man had not eaten food that provided a natural discharge of the outer cell layer on the tongue, the very special syndrome occurred.

Rare antibiotic side effect

In the medical journal National Library of Medicine Doctors have previously described patients who have received BHT as a rare side effect of antibiotics.

The condition can, according to the US hospital chain Mayo Clinic also occur due to poor oral hygiene, smoking – or the diet that this man had had.

– Although Black Hairy Tongue looks alarming, it does not usually cause health problems and is usually painless. Black tongue disappears by eliminating possible causes or contributing factors, and by practicing good oral hygiene, it says on the website.

Fresh in 20 days

It is not difficult to get rid of BHT.

All you need to do is clean your tongue carefully with, for example, a soft toothbrush, and On have good oral hygiene.

– The patient and his caregivers were advised on proper cleansing methods, and the discoloration disappeared after 20 days, the Indian doctors write.

See a doctor when…

Lommelegen has previously written about when you should see a doctor for problems with the tongue:

  • Problems moving the tongue: Seek medical attention immediately
  • Taste changes and changed size of the tongue: See a doctor
  • Color change on tongue: Seek medical attention if problem persists
  • Pain and burning on the tongue: Seek medical attention if problem persists
  • Sores on the tongue: Can often be completely harmless, if you have bitten your tongue. This will heal in a week. When you have sores in your mouth that do not go away, it is important to go to a doctor or dentist for evaluation. This may be a sign of an underlying serious illness such as cancer.
