Coastal Carolina Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 5 West Virginia, Prepares for South Carolina Game

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team fell to the No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers 2-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-7-3, 1-4-2 Sun Belt, while WVU improve to 11-0-4, 4-0-3 Sun Belt.

The Mountaineers got off to an early lead in the second minute when Yotaro Tsukada netted the first goal of the match to put WVU up 1-0.

In the 29th minute, the Mountaineers looked to extend their lead when dribbled past CCU’s keeper Alex Hare and took aim on goal but Gudjon Stefansson was able to clear the ball away to hold the score at 1-0.

WVU increased its lead in the 33rd minute when Luke McCormick belted the ball into the top right corner off an assist from Sergio Ors Navarro to make the score 2-0.

At the end of the first frame, the Mountaineers led 7-0 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks.

The Chants looked to get on the scoreboard in the 67th minute when Something Santos ripped a shot on the goal but it was blocked away by the WVU defense to keep the score at 2-0.

West Virginia controlled the remaining 20 minutes of the game outshooting Coastal 3-1 while forcing Hare to make two saves to take the 2-0 victory.

The Chanticleers will hit the road to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Oct. 27. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
