Coast Guard Officer Rescues Woman in Dramatic Sea Rescue: Hero Swims 400 Meters in the Dark

A Coast Guard officer rescued a woman who had fallen into the sea by swimming about 400 meters in the middle of the night.

According to the Ulsan Marine Police Station on the 10th, at around 0:30 on this day, a report was received that ‘a person was drowning and struggling’ in the sea off Yeonhwa-ri, Gijang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan.

The Ulsan Coast Guard, which is in charge of the Busan Gijang area, immediately sent a patrol vessel and a coastal rescue boat, but had difficulty approaching the accident site due to the shallow water. At this time, Sergeant Park Cheol-soo (39) of the Gijang Marine Police Station, who was dispatched to the scene by vehicle, jumped about 100 meters down to the seaside rock and jumped into the sea with his bare body.

Sergeant Park found a woman in her 50s floating in the water after swimming about 200 meters. Sergeant Park picked up the unconscious woman and swam back toward land, saving her life. After struggling against the cold sea for about 30 minutes, Sergeant Park was hospitalized with exhaustion, muscle cramps, and abrasions all over her body. She said that Sergeant Park said, “At the time, all she thought was that she had to be saved at all costs.”

Sergeant Park also received the 2020 Republic of Korea Civil Service Award for his contribution in rescuing all 46 people on board when an oil product carrier exploded at Yeompo Pier in Dong-gu, Ulsan in September 2019.
