Party negotiations on the new coalition and the mayor begin in Tallinn
Earlier this week, the current city manager Mihails Kelvarts was ousted from the post of mayor in a vote of no confidence, ending the 20-year dominance of the currently opposition Center Party in Tallinn. In 2021, a coalition of the Center Party and the Social Democrats was formed in the capital, but this week the Social Democrats announced that they would leave the coalition. After Kelwarts was elected as the chairman of the Center Party at the Congress in September, he was accused of intensifying the orientation of the party’s policy towards the interests of the Russian-speaking people, which is why many members left the Center Party in recent months.
On Sunday, the Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party, Isamaa and Estonia 200 are gathering for talks in Tallinn. The leader of the Social Democrats, Lauri Leenemets, has stated that the Social Democrats want the coalition negotiations to take place as soon as possible and the new city government to be able to work as early as next week. The representative of the Reform Party, Pärtels Pēters Pere, also said that there is a power vacuum in Tallinn at the moment, and a new mayor must be found quickly. According to him, speed is more important than drawing red lines during negotiations.
