Prime Minister (PM) Italia Mario Draghi submit his resignation to the President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday (21/7) local time. The resignation was proposed after Draghi’s government collapsed, which plunged Italy into political turmoil and had a severe impact on financial markets.
As reported ReutersThursday (21/7/2022), the Italian presidential office in a statement called President Mattarella ‘notes’ Draghi’s resignation and asked him to be the executor (Plt) for a while.
The Italian presidential office statement made no further details on what President Mattarella would do next. Political sources said earlier this week that President Mattarella might dissolve parliament and call for early elections in October.

President Mattarella is scheduled to meet the leaders of both houses of the Italian parliament on Thursday (21/7) afternoon local time.
Italy’s governing coalition collapsed on Wednesday when three of Draghi’s main partners rejected a no-confidence vote he called for seeking to end divisions and renew their fractured alliance.
The political crisis that lasted for months has ended stability in Italy. Bonds and stocks in Italy fell sharply on Thursday (21/7) local time, as markets braced for the first interest rate hike from the European Central Bank since 2011.
Draghi himself submitted his resignation last week after one of his coalition partners, the Five Star Movement Party, failed to support him in a no-confidence vote over his handling of the high cost of living.
