Coalition disagreements on important issues, with no resolution yet in sight

Ministers Klever, Faber, Agema and Wiersma during the General Political Reflection

The new cabinet has only just started, but the first cracks are already starting to show. Sources within the coalition say otherwise News hour to feel “hitting a wall”. A week after the General Political Showdown that got out of hand, tensions continue to rise.

The party leaders of the four coalition parties are still doing not on the same page it was already evident during that important debate last week. The government aims to “the strictest asylum policy ever“, but the way he wants to achieve this, that is by making part of the Aliens Act inactive, has been strongly criticized. The coalition party NSC is also not convinced about the plan.

NSC executive director Van Vroonhoven said during Friday’s debate that he has a “strong opinion” that the use of the state’s emergency right of the Aliens Act would continue. PVV leader Wilders and Asylum Minister Faber (PVV) are sticking firmly to the plan.

Last weekend, Nieuwsuur looked back on a tough week in The Hague:

On Wednesday it became clear again that the coalition parties are not unanimous on another hot issue: agriculture. Agriculture Minister BBB Wiersma wrote to the House of Representatives on Friday that she does not want to ban electric shocks in the livestock sector at this time. In a parliamentary debate on Wednesday it became clear that one majority he would like such a ban. Includes coalition parties PVV, VVD and NSC.

MP NSC Holman said that the minister is “hearing, but not listening” and PVV MP Graus talked about electroshock weapons that should come under the Weapons Act.

The NSC was the largest non-parliamentary supporter of the cabinet in its creation, with greater distance between the House and the cabinet. In practice, that party seems to have a lot of difficulty with this form. The leader of the party Omtzigt, who is sick at home, but also Van Vroonhoven who is in his place, is obstructing the asylum policy that the cabinet is now developing, which greatly frightened the other coalition parties.

In the meantime, it seems that this is also affecting the supporters of the NSC. Last week, the research group Ipsos I&O did only seven seats for Pieter Omtzigt’s party.

Ton Timmermans and Bert Smit were members of the NSC from the very beginning. One has suspended his membership, while the other has confidence in his party:

Do NSC voters still have confidence in their party?
