Coach Sebastian Hoeneß Praises Angelo Stiller’s Potential for Starting XI Spot

U21 international Angelo Stiller came to Stuttgart from TSG Hoffenheim. VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß thinks very highly of the midfielder. Will he put him in the starting XI on Saturday?

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Coach Sebastian Hoeneß has known the new midfield hope Angelo Stiller for a long time – from times together at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and in the second team as well as in the youth of FC Bayern Munich. That’s why he knows “pretty much exactly” what to expect from the 22-year-old at VfB Stuttgart. He sees him directly as a starting eleven candidate for the game in the Bundesliga on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) against SC Freiburg.

“He is able to give the game a certain rhythm because of his technical and strategic skills. He’s someone who plays with few contacts and often makes the right decision,” Hoeneß praised the “classic six”. Stiller’s style of play “at best means that we get better dynamics in the game.”

Stiller came to the Swabians from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim as a replacement for Wataru Endo and after the Japanese captain and leading player moved to Liverpool. “He’s still a young lad. The expectation should not be that he will replace Wataru one-to-one,” said Hoeneß. However, he believes that Stiller can immediately play a “good role” in Stuttgart’s midfield, even if he can still develop.

Like Endo, Stiller is not a “loudspeaker,” said the 41-year-old. “Nevertheless, he coaches. He is more communicative than Wataru. He has a certain game intelligence to be able to assess situations.” Should Stiller make his debut for the Swabians on Saturday, he can make a first impression of it.
