Janne Jönsson, 63, is currently the coach of Stabaek women’s team in the Norwegian top league. And right now he is the one in the headlines in Norway, after a game against Vålerenga on Tuesday.
It was a situation in extra time in the second half that caught the attention. Stabaek were then 3-2 down and chasing a late equaliser, when Vålerenga player Karina Saevik lost the ball over the line but continued to run up the pitch.
Jönsson then chose to act. The Swede stepped onto the field (!) to stop the ball in pursuit of a quick throw-in. But he missed and instead hit Saevik, whereupon he was shown a red card.
Jönsson then made her way to the fourth referee – and gave her a hug.
– He ran onto the field with the intention of taking the ball. That in itself causes him to get a red card. Then it is a bit unlucky that there is also a player, says referee Veronika Fjeldvaer to VG.
She continues:
– Then he tries to seek the fourth referee in a way that is not accepted.
Jönsson himself believes that he did nothing to deserve his dismissal. But he admits he was wrong.
– The ball was out and of course I want to get the game going again as soon as possible. I went out on the pitch and of course I’m not going to do that, said the Swede to TV2.
– I don’t think it should be a red card, but I shouldn’t be out there on the pitch. So maybe that’s why. But the ball was out of play.
He explains the hug he gave to the fourth referee as follows to NRK:
– I wanted to apologize.
But the judging team did not appreciate Sweden’s actions.
– I think it’s a behavior that we don’t need to have on the football field, said the fourth referee Marit Skurdal to NRK.
The incident and the red card will be reported to the Norwegian federation, who must now decide how Jönsson should be punished.
