(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Dong-chil = “I have never won a championship, and I don’t think I am a superstar. I think I was an indispensable player on the team who played the role of supporting such stars. As a leader, our players “I want to become a leader who provides good support (so that he can become a superstar).”
In a broadcast interview prior to the professional volleyball match between KB Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance at Uijeongbu Gymnasium on the 22nd, KB Insurance coach Ha Hyun-yong (32) looked back on his 20 years as a player and revealed his dream as a coach.

Coach Ha Hyun-yong’s resume as a player was not that flashy, but he faithfully and quietly played for 20 years until last season.

In 2005, when the professional volleyball V-League was launched, he debuted wearing the uniform of LG Fire & Marine Insurance, the predecessor of KB Insurance, and played as a middle blocker, winning Rookie of the Year that year.

Afterwards, he worked at Woori Card and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, and after retiring from Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in the 2023-2024 season, he entered the leadership path as a coach at KB Insurance ahead of this season.
During his 20 seasons as a player, he participated in a total of 577 games (2,044 sets), scoring 3,481 points, 1,018 blocks, and an overall attack rate of 53.88%.

So far, only three players have exceeded 1,000 blocks in V-League history.
Coach Ha placed his name in third place in the all-time blocking rankings, following active player Shin Young-seok (KEPCO, 1,253) and retired Lee Seon-gyu (1,056).
Although he had nothing to do with winning as a player, he showed off his presence as a middle blocker on the court.
Now, as a leader, he takes on the challenge of winning the dream that he could not achieve.
He said, “I heard about other players’ retirement ceremonies, but I didn’t think about it, so I’m grateful to the club.” He added, “I don’t think the feeling of retirement will come to me too much because I’m still in the field (as a coach). There are times when I want to play on the court, but now I’m watching the players.” “I will take good care of you,” he said.
He advised the players, “I would like to tell them to seize the opportunity when they have it. Since you never know when the opportunity will come again, you must have the mindset to seize that opportunity.”

I feel my parents’ hearts a lot these days. I will continue to be a good son and a good father. “I will live as a person,” he pledged.
