Coach Bo Svensson from Bundesliga bottom team FSV Mainz 05 has warned against concentrating too much on top striker Victor Boniface in the duel with Bayer Leverkusen. The Nigerian, who has already scored six goals this season, is “a great player, but things continue with Wirtz and Hofmann, who complement him very well,” said Svensson. Then there’s Granit Xhaka, who the Mainz coach believes is “currently the best player in the Bundesliga”.
Before the home game against the second-placed team on Saturday (3:30 p.m.), Svensson was optimistic despite the season-long negative series of ten games without a win.
“We’re certainly not doing everything perfectly at the moment, but the boys are trying to correct that with everything they have,” said the Dane: “That’s the only way for us and it makes me feel good.”
New signing Josuha Guilavogui, who was recently out of contract and was signed on Monday in response to the injury woes in the Mainz defense, is not yet an option for the starting eleven.
“We are building him up carefully, he is not yet at 100 percent,” said Svensson about the former VfL Wolfsburg captain, but emphasized: “We all feel that we have got a guy who is doing us very well.”
