On Monday (January 1), the leading Chinese company in oil and gas production, CNPC, took over the task of the main operator of the West Qurna/1 field in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq, from the American company (ExxonMobil).
The receipt and handover process took place between the two companies at a ceremony held at the field site (50 km) northwest of Basra, in the presence of Bassem Muhammad Khudair, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Extraction Affairs, Director General of the Basra Oil Company, officials from the Chinese Consulate General in Basra, and representatives of the two companies.
Ji Gang, advisor to the Chinese Consulate General in Basra, said in a speech during the celebration that China and Iraq will work together to make the West Qurna/1 oil field project an excellent model for cooperation in the field of energy between the two countries.
For his part, Bassem Muhammad Khudair told Xinhua News Agency, “We congratulate the Chinese company for becoming the main contractor for this field,” adding, “We have every confidence in the company because of its human capabilities, strategy, and vision that this project will continue to succeed and implement all activities within Required timings.
He expressed his wishes to the Chinese company and its partners for the continuation and sustainability of the implementation of this project.
He stressed his confidence in the company’s management of this field, as it is a large international company, saying, “We have every confidence that the project will continue with success and from success to better success.”
In turn, the Director General of the Basra Oil Company, Bassem Abdul Karim, addressed in a speech he delivered at the handover and reception ceremony, saying, “Your presence in our business is a great honor, and it is certainly surprising that we have such a large and well-known international company with highly skilled professional employees.”
He added, “We strongly believe that we are able to advance the work in the West Qurna/1 field to new heights with your help and support for the benefit of the Iraqi people.”
He continued, “We will continue our cooperation to reach our common goals of increasing production, enhancing the safety and reliability of facilities, fully complying with safety protocols, and providing our best.”
In addition, Chen Mingzhuo, President of PetroChina Company in West Qurna/1, said, “PetroChina Company will adhere to the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, follow the vision of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and ensure the smooth delivery and orderly transition of the project.”
West Qurna/1 field is considered one of the largest oil fields in Iraq, with its annual production of crude oil estimated at more than 25 million tons, and Iraq is counting on it to increase its oil production.
