A few days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov was asked about the possibility of sheltering refugees. He said no European country was afraid of the migration wave. “These are not the refugees we are used to. As the Austrian Chancellor said, these are our relatives, our family. These are Europeans, intelligent, educated people, some of them programmers. We, like everyone else, are ready to welcome them.
This is not the usual refugee wave of people with an uncertain past. None of the European countries is worried about them, “Petkov said.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov, who has not been prime minister for almost a year, has been outraged by accusations of racism.
“For me, this statement of the current Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kiril Petkov is scandalous – I said during an event in Targovishte, as soon as he said these words. “Petkov’s scandalous statement, quoted by CNN, was overlooked by the Bulgarian media and swept away by the ruling party,” he said on Facebook.
