The Electoral Power of Venezuela denied this Friday, July 7, that the resignation of its vice president could have an impact on the organization of the parliamentary votes on December 6, which will be boycotted by the bulk of the opposition, who denounces them as a “fraud. “.

Alleging personal reasons, Rafael Simón Jiménez resigned on Thursday 6-A as vice-presidency of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and a substitute has already been appointed via court ruling: Leonardo Morales, from the political party of the dissident Chavista Henri Falcón, the advanced center-left organization Progressive.

“The resignation of the former rector will not affect the development of the process,” said the CNE on Twitter and said that Jiménez maintained “good relations” with the rest of the board.

At the same time, in a sentence published this Friday on its website, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) announced the appointment of Morales as rector and vice president of the electoral body once “the absolute fault was verified.”

The current CNE board of directors had been appointed on June 12 by the TSJ, which declared an “omission” of Parliament, the only power controlled by the opposition in Venezuela, in its power to choose it.

For this reason, the unicameral National Assembly called this procedure “illegal” and some thirty opposition parties refuse to participate in the upcoming legislative elections.

From the head of Parliament, the opposition Juan Guaidó claimed in January 2019 the presidency in charge of the Caribbean country with recognition of fifty governments, led by the United States.

On Tuesday, the top diplomat in the Donald Trump administration for Venezuelan affairs, Elliott Abrams, said he hopes that countries that recognize Guaidó will continue to do so even if the leader remains on the sidelines of the parliamentarians.
