Decline of the physical video market in value: -17.2% in value
In the first half of 2021, DVD and Blu-Ray sales including tax in France amounted to € 110.19 million. Household video spending fell by 17.2% compared to the same period in 2020. This decrease affects the DVD segment (-19.7% to € 73.80 million) more than that of Blu-ray (- 11.7% to € 36.40 million). Blu-ray represents 33.0% of sales in value of physical video over the first six months of 2021, against 31.0% over the same period in 2020. The closure of physical stores has largely slowed the consumption of physical video in the first semester. However, the closure of non-essential businesses lasted longer in 2020 (8 weeks) than in 2021 (around 7 weeks).
The volumes of video media (DVD and Blu-ray) sold between January and June 2021 decreased slightly (-3.2% compared to 2020). 17.48 million media were sold in the first six months of 2021, including 13.69 million DVDs (-6.0% compared to January-June 2020) and 3.79 million Blu-rays (+ 8.7%). Over the past twelve months, the number of video media sold decreased 12.3% to 43.96 million units.
