Info TV, screening report and prognosis | Game overview | UCLA expresses confidence in QBs Thompson-Robinson, Garbers

UCLA football already had a lot on the line heading into the Pac-12 Conference South Division game against the Utah Utes tonight. If the Bruins win tonight, they will take sole possession of the division after Washington State defeats Arizona State in Tempe this afternoon.

Redshirt rookie Ethan Garbers will start for the Bruins tonight. If Dorian Thompson-Robinson is completely unavailable tonight, Chase Artopoeus would be the replacement. Quarterback Chase Griffin has also been ruled out for tonight.

Starting right tackle Alec Anderson won’t play for the Bruins tonight. He suffered an injury against Oregon which briefly took him out of the game, but was able to return. Linebacker Caleb Johnson won’t play for the Bruins. Anderson and Johnson did not travel with the team to Utah, according to the pre-game radio show.

Jon Gaines II starts for Anderson while Ale Kaho starts in place of Johnson. Jay Shaw started for the Bruins against Cameron Johnson, who will miss the first half after being called up for targeting Oregon last week.

Utah wins the toss and decides to receive. Utes linebacker Devin Lloyd returns for the second half, called to target last week against Oregon State. The decision also keeps Garbers on the sidelines to think a bit longer before taking the field for his first start.

Utah’s Tavion Thomas scored a 10-yard touchdown in opening practice against UCLA with 11:26 left in the first quarter. PAT good. Utes leads 7-0.

Garbers completes a pass to Brittain Brown for 12 yards and another first down. UCLA is moving fast. Brown with consecutive runs and another first down. The quarterback gropes later in the drive but manages to recover the ball. UCLA is content with the 28-yard field goal attempt. Utah leads UCLA 7-3 with 3:48 left in the first quarter.

Thomas scored again for Utah. First game of the second quarter. The Utes lead UCLA 14-3 with 14:55 left in the second quarter. PAT good.

Thompson-Robinson still in uniform and active on the sidelines, helping with offensive signaling to players on the field. Brittain Brown featured heavily on this record.

Garbers pitched to tight end Greg Dulcich for a gain of 6 yards but less than the first down on thirds and 7. The Bruins needed a yard for the first down of the next game, but running back Zach Charbonnet had landed a 30-yard touchdown on the next play on the fourth down. PAT good.

Utah leads UCLA 14-10 with 9:06 left in the second quarter. Garbers has completed 10 of 12 passes for 68 yards in the first half so far.

Fourth? No problem for Zach Charbonnet, who comes out for a 30-yard touchdown!

The Bruins are 3-for-3 on the fourth down, including two on the last drive. UCLA went 5 for 7 in fourth place last week against Oregon.

Utah QB Cameron Rising with a 4-yard pass to Dalton Kincaid. PAT good. UCLA lost 21-10 with 5:51 left in the second quarter.

Garbers has a pass deflected and intercepted by Nephi Sewell on the next drive. Booth also examines a targeting call at the end of the play. No targeting after the exam.

Rising completes a seven assist to Micah Bernard. Utah’s Tavion Thomas with a 10-yard touchdown the next game for his third score of the night. PAT good. Utah converts turnover to points to lead the Bruins 28-10 with 4:27 left in the first half.

UCLA unable to respond with a score on the next drive. The Bruins are forced to kick.

The Bruins’ defense makes a save as Rising throws an incomplete pass in the fourth and seventh.

UCLA failed on a 55-yard field goal attempt as the time expired in the second quarter.

Devin Lloyd (Utah) and Cameron Johnson (UCLA) are back in the game for the second half. Garbers put pressure on the fourth and fifth. Incomplete pass. Declining turnover.

Jordan Noyes’ 47-yard field goal attempt for Utah is not good. Utah leads UCLA 28-10 with 10:07 left in the third quarter.

The Utes continue to put pressure on Garbers. Even with the pressure on him, Garbers completed a pass to Chase Cota for a gain of 41 yards.
