The situation of the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso is complicated, where this morning – January 15 – all health personnel and hospitalized patients were subjected to a molecular swab. Yesterday the results of the tests had ascertained other 5 positivity, as reported by internal sources of the hospital in Primonumero: the head physician Ennio Lubrano, the head nurse and two nurses have contracted the infection, a sign that the virus is circulating in the hospital continuing to infect health workers and the numerous hospitalized patients.
The latest positive diagnoses that emerged are in addition to the 22 infections (between patients and health professionals) ascertained two days ago, a number that also includes a dozen patients already transferred to the Surgery ward, where the cluster has broken out. If Chirurgia remains closed to hospitalizations, as requested by the director of the Operational Unit Giuseppe Cecere, no particular decisions have been taken by the top management for the Department of Medicine.
Currently Medicine, affected by the last hospital outbreak after the one in Surgery (about thirty health personnel and infected patients) remains open but is collapsing and records a shortage of personnel that adds emergency to emergency. Continue to be “We strongly advise against” the transfer of Covid patients from Termoli and Isernia as happened the other night, when in the peripheral centers the phone call from the health management informed that it would have been better to suspend, as far as possible, the transport of patients to Campobasso, keeping them a few hours in the gray areas of San Timoteo and Veneziale for lack of beds and staff.
The situation is explosive and coincides with the beginning of what many doctors, including from Molise, identify as the “onset of a new peak” of hospitalizations. “It will be a difficult month”, the consideration of doctors and experts who are dealing with a resumption of covid hospitalizations after a few weeks in which it seemed that the ambulance race had slowed down.
In the meantime, work should begin in the next few days to adapt the Termoli and Isernia hospitals to the Covid Plan. The renovations of the San Timoteo and Veneziale First Aid units must be completed by January with the external prefabricated buildings for covid patients and another 5 ICU beds (3 in Termoli and 2 in Isernia) essential in case of emergency.
Here are the details of the Plan:
