A Saudi Pro League league boss has revealed that his country’s top clubs do not have to spend their own money to sign international stars. The league itself provides the money for the transfer fees and salaries of players like Cristiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr) and Neymar (Al-Hilal).
Saad Al-Laziz, vice-chairman of the Saudi Pro League, said Kora Rotana: “Al-Nassr didn’t pay a single dollar itself to get Ronaldo. The Saudi Pro League transfer program is responsible for signing Ronaldo and also pays his salary. When it comes to the moves from Neymar to Al-Hilal, Jota too Ittihad and Brozovic and Otavio to Al-Nassr is the same way.”
With Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr, a transfer offensive by the Saudi Arabian clubs began at the beginning of 2023. CR7 signed what is probably the most lucrative contract in football history, which will guarantee him an annual salary of 200 million euros.
Neymar reportedly earns 150 million euros per season at Al-Hilal. In addition, his former club Paris Saint-Germain received a transfer fee of 90 million euros for the Brazilian, who is currently out for a long time with a knee injury.
Further transfers of well-known players to Saudi Arabia are expected in the coming transfer periods. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is said to be at the top of the Saudi club’s wish list.
The SPL wants to significantly raise its level and thus make positive headlines with a view to hosting the 2034 World Cup.
