The “Butterbrezel” club in Tübingen’s old town has just closed its doors forever. The reasons: too high costs and too little income. The former operator reports that nightlife has changed dramatically – especially since the Corona pandemic. He told SWR: “People have found other ways to party.” By this he means house parties and, especially in summer, outdoor events. Another reason is that many people have to save money.
Is a club a cultural place?
According to a spokeswoman for the city of Tübingen, the number of clubs has continued to decline in recent years – a trend that can also be observed in other cities: A study from Stuttgart in 2023 shows that 50 percent of bars and clubs there see their future at risk. Most cities recognize clubs as social meeting places rather than cultural venues. In these cases, they are no longer supported by the state.
