Club YLA won its first Belgian Cup on Wednesday evening after a nerve-wracking final in and against Leuven. The Bruges women’s team defeated OHL Women in the King Power @Den Dreef Stadium on penalties.
Nearly 3,000 fans showed up under a radiant sun for a wonderful cup final. Saar Janssen gave the home team the lead in the first half. At half time, favorite OHL was ahead. After the break, Club YLA came via Caitlin Lievens.
There was no more scoring afterwards, not even in extra time. So it was penalty kicks and Club YLA remained the calmest. Rania Boutiebi calmly scored the decisive penalty.
After two lost finals, it is Club YLA’s first Belgian Cup on its record. OHL ends its first final on a losing streak, but has to switch things up quickly. Another important home match against Standard Femina in the title battle will follow on Sunday.
