Club veteran Marcel Halstenberg wants to leave the cup winner, the picture and kicker report unanimously.
The 31-year-old, who has been playing in Leipzig for eight years and has become a national player there, came to RB managing director Max Eberl at the end of the season with a request to change.
According to the reports, there are private and family reasons for the surprising farewell.
Halstenberg would therefore like to return to his homeland: the native of Lower Saxony wants to go to his youth club Hannover 96, where he enjoyed his entire football training from 1999 to 2011.
After stints with Borussia Dortmund’s U23s and FC St. Pauli, Halstenberg moved to RB Leipzig, then still in the second division.
Eberl is said to have asked Halstenberg to reconsider his decision about the summer and then to tell him his final decision.
Understandable: Halstenberg played 40 competitive games (31 of them in the Bundesliga) despite David Raum’s commitment and was also given preference in the cup final by his opponent on the left flank.
According to kicker information, the conversation between Eberl and Halstenberg has not yet taken place. On Saturday, the Saxons will start with the performance tests in preparation for the 2023/24 season.
Whether with or without Halstenberg will be seen then at the latest.
