Manchester United have decided not to appeal against Casemiro’s red card against Southampton in a 0-0 draw.

For a tackle on Carlos Alcaras in the first half of the game, referee Anthony Taylor issued a VAR decision and sent off Casemiro for a foul.

Brazil national team midfielder Casemiro was also sent off during a home game against Crystal Palace and was suspended for four matches.

Casemiro will miss the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham on Sunday and the Premier League matches against Newcastle United, Brentford and Everton next month.

He can play in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 against Real Betis.

While the club judged it unlikely to overturn the ruling on appeal, manager Eric ten Haag felt it was a harsh decision. He clearly expressed his dissatisfaction with the inconsistency of the VAR intervention.

After Sunday’s win over the Saints, manager Ten Haag said:

“There is no consistency. The Premier League wants intensity. Casemiro has never been sent off in over 500 games in Europe, where he was sent off twice. He plays tough but plays right.”

said.

“As against Palace, it is controversial. If you freeze the scene, it looks bad. People who know about football know what is bad and what is fair. Casemiro is a fair player. He’s tough but fair, and I’m disappointed he’s never been ejected in over 500 big league games.”

In an interview with football magazine Panenka, Casemiro said despite his physical style of play, he never intended to hurt anyone with his tackling.

“I think the most important thing is to see that there is no malice, as well as the referees and fans.”

“I always try to get the ball. I also like strong, intense play, but there is no malice. I’ve never put out a stud to hurt a player. If you’re trying to hurt someone, that’s not football.”

“Fouls can happen in football. that’s part of the game But there is never any malice. It comes from the values my mother taught me. I will never hurt an opponent. I won’t even insult you. I will never do anything bad.”

“Of course on the field a player can get excited. that’s normal It always happens to represent the team. But the value my mother taught me is that you should never harm anyone.”

“Because it is soccer, you will get fouls and cards. But it won’t hurt anyone.”
