Towards the end of the morning conference this Tuesday, December 19, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador paused to congratulate the new Liga MX champion, Club América, which last Sunday won three goals to zero (4-0). 1 overall) to the Tigres of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL).

“I want to congratulate América for their victory, they played very well, regardless of the controversy over extra time, it is a fact that they played well the entire season, they came in first place (…) The people were very happy, they did not let me nor sleep, but there was a lot of emotion,” said the president.

Likewise, AMLO took the opportunity to congratulate the runner-up Tigres, as he considered that the Nuevo León team also played very well.

This Sunday, the Coapa team won its 14th championship in history, thus truncating the cats’ dream of becoming two-time champions of the soccer league. With goals from Julián Quiñones, Richard Sánchez and Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez in extra time, América sealed with a flourish a tournament in which they remained constant and as leaders of the general table.

Although the first leg at ‘El Volcán’ was 1-1 and left the door open for either team to win, Sunday’s match was far from the demonstration of soccer that both teams gave last Thursday the 15th; However, a slap from Fulgencio to Quiñones that earned him expulsion in the 79th minute changed the course of the game and that was when the Águilas came to the fore.

Regular time ended without goals but with dominance of those led by Brazilian André Jardine. The first extra time had just begun when the naturalized Mexican, Quiñones, scored the goal that brought América closer to the Liga MX championship. Nahuel Guzmán, Tigres goalkeeper, shone during the first 90 minutes, but it only took him five minutes to lose his head and get sent off after accumulating two yellow cards.

At minute 103, a powerful shot by Richard Sánchez hit the goal now defended by Carlos Felipe Rodríguez, making the overall score 3-1 and sentencing the championship. But if that were not enough, one minute before the end of the second extra time, another goal but this time from ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez sealed América’s excellent tournament, thus achieving their 14th league title.
