Clowns arrested for attending a colleague’s wake during the pandemic in Peru

Peruvian police arrested five clowns who participated in the wake of a colleague, failing to comply with the security measures that prohibit meetings due to the new coronavirus, the institution reported on Tuesday.

“I honor your work, gentlemen clowns, but unfortunately you cannot be exempted from responsibility. You have committed a crime and unfortunately you are detained “said an official from the San Juan de Lurigancho police station, one of the districts most affected by the pandemic in Lima.

“You think this is a joke, you think you can make fun of society” attending these meetings, the officer reproached the clowns who wore painted faces, colorful costumes and wigs.

Along with the five clowns, the police arrested three other people who were attending the wake in a neighborhood of San Juan de Lurigancho.

“I know it’s wrong, but for us it is very painful to lose a fellow artist”one of the clowns replied, according to the press.

In Peru, parties and social or family gatherings are prohibited by the pandemic, which has infected more than 652,037 people and killed 28,944, according to the latest official balance.

According to the authorities, the meetings are the new source of contagion.

In the framework of the fight against coronavirus, Peru extended the state of emergency until December 7, while maintaining the closure of borders and the night curfew in effect from March 16.

Peru ranks fifth globally in number of cases and ninth in deaths. However, proportionally to its population, since last week it has registered the highest mortality rate in the world, with 89.43 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the ranking prepared by the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
