Jakarta –
A number of United States (US) government agencies are threatened with closure and the salaries of civil servants are in danger of being in arrears. This happened after the Republican Party firmly rejected the proposed government funding bill at the US House of Representatives session.
Reporting from Reuters, Saturday (30/9/2023), the bill actually contains a plan to temporarily finance a number of activities of the United States (US) federal government which is currently short of funds.
In fact, if the plan is passed, the US can disburse a number of funds to assist the government process for 30 days until it ends on November 17 2023. The bill also contains the government’s plan to cut spending and limit immigration to reduce government costs.
Unfortunately, in the vote held on Friday (29/9), the DPR was unable to approve the draft with a result of 232 to 198.
It is said that this could cause a number of government agencies such as national park managers and a number of research institutions in the US to close. Apart from that, canceling this bill could also hamper the salaries of 4 million federal civil servants and disrupt other government agencies.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also said that the impact of closing a number of government agencies could damage the progress of the US economy. In addition, this condition can delay programs for small businesses and children and can delay major infrastructure improvements.
This closure will be the fourth in the past decade and just four months after the US entered a deadlock that saw the federal government default on its US$ 31 trillion debt.
The repeated risks have raised concerns on Wall Street, where ratings agency Moody’s has warned it could damage US creditworthiness.
