Mouila, March 22, 2023 (AGP) – The work of the capacity building workshop for magistrates of the courts of Lambaréné (Moyen Ogooué), Tchibanga (Nyanga) and Mouila (Ngounié), in the fight against impunity for crimes committed against journalists and the protection of freedom of expression in Gabon, ended last weekend in Mouila, on a note of satisfaction for the participants and the initiators of this programme.
After being informed and documented on the protection of freedom of expression, as well as on the mechanisms for protecting journalists in the exercise of their work, the guarantors of individual and collective freedoms received their training certificates. This solemnity took place in the presence of the second deputy mayor, Rigobert Tsamba, representing the mayor of the commune of Mouila, and many other personalities.
‘‘Allow me, on behalf of the government, to express my sincere thanks to you for your active participation in the meeting which ends today. You are now trained in the protection of journalists. I urge you to put this knowledge into practice and cultivate information sharing in your respective jurisdictions.”, spoke, Guy Martial Boucal, representing the Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, who closed the said works.
”We learned a lot about the journalist and the media staff”, indicated for his part Illicht Ndjeme, public prosecutor at the court of Tchibanga, in the province of Nyanga. An opinion shared by Christian Mba Meloume, dean of judges at the Lambaréné court, in the province of Moyen Ogooué. ”This is an important seminar that strengthens our capacities in the exercise of our work. It is an enriching experience and we have been greatly edified in relation to the theme”, he asserted.
‘‘The knowledge that we have will allow us to improve our reactions, especially since we have conflicts between the population and the journalists. Before, we only focused on the penal code and the reactions were disproportionate” chimed in another participant.
All the beneficiaries of this workshop, expressed the wish, at the end of the work, to see the continuation of the continuous training of magistrates on the fundamental rights and the safety of journalists and media professionals. This workshop was co-organized by the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (Unesco), with the support of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (Unoca), in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice.
