The Australian Open continues to provide us with excellent tennis. After the great semi between Yannick Siner and Novak Djokovic earlier today (Friday), we saw Daniil Medvedev make a big comeback against Alexander Zverev en route to the final.
Medvedev, who already led 0:2 himself in the Australian Championship final against Rafael Nadal in 2022 and lost, came back from 7:5, 6:3, 4:3 (30:0) against Zverev to win. Later Zverev still led 4:5 and served in the tiebreaker of the second set, but the Russian showed great character and came back.
“It’s an amazing comeback and his third final in 4 years in Australia,” said Jose Morgado. The commentator emphasized that Medvedev took the lead for the first time in the entire tournament only in a situation of 2:3 in the fifth set.
“Medvedev’s game is one of the best things I’ve seen at the Australian Open. His drop shot and return on the way to victory were incredible,” said tennis commentator Scott Barkley.
Medvedev reached the Grand Slam final for the sixth time, and the first in which he will not meet Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. The Russian won one of them, at the 2021 US Open.
Medvedev, himself, remained humble at the end: “I would say that this is not my best court in terms of self-confidence or esteem on the court. That’s why I came back from several pitfalls.”
