The City Council of Bergen has on Saturday decided that all gyms in the city must close. The municipality announces this in a press release.

The closure takes place on suspicion of spreading coronavirus infection at a double-digit number of gyms in the municipality. The student community and denominations in the municipality are also affected.

The closure applies in the first instance from Sunday 28 March at 07.00 until and including Wednesday 31 March. On Tuesday, the city council will reconsider the measures, and make a decision on whether they are strict enough, or whether it must be tightened further.

– We have not been able to map the extent and in order to limit the possible further spread of infection, all gyms in Bergen must be closed, says health councilor Beate Husa in the press release.

We have an ongoing outbreak among students and at a fitness center where we know that there has been infection between people. When we track this, we see that they have been to quite a few gyms in the city, says Egil Bovim, assistant infection control doctor at VG.

– We have to clarify this and stop the spread, so now we keep the gyms closed for a couple of days, he adds.

– How many are infected?

– We are constantly getting new numbers, but what we have from infection among students and at gyms now is in the order of 50 plus, says Bovim.

Bergen municipality currently has a rising infection trend, although the infection rates in the city have not seen any major growth since a major infection peak in November.

The new outbreak, which the municipality has not yet mapped, is said to be driven by infection with the British mutation of the virus. This variety is far more contagious, and spreads more easily.

City councilor Roger Valhammer points out in the same press release that the city has still not received a large third wave of infection.

– We are now working hard to prevent it and hope that this measure contributes to it, he says.
