Closed schools: Why there will be no classes on November 20 –

Schools will remain closed on November 20, as there will be demonstrations in the field of Education. In fact, the decision not to hold classes is headed for finalization, because a general strike has been declared.

Many school sections will remain closed for the same reason. Many teachers are expected to participate in the nationwide strike announced by ADEDY.

So far, the teachers’ unions have not issued any announcement, however teachers and professors are always covered by the “umbrella” of the Supreme Administration of Public Employees Unions.

It is worth noting that ADEDY is going to go on strike on the same day as GSEE, which represents workers in the private sector. Public and private sectors join forces and go on a mass strike, sending a resounding message against the precision that plagues the country. The present is expected to be dynamic and therefore many schools will be under-functioning due to the participation of teachers in the strike.

Besides, in the declaration of ADEDY special reference is made to Education: “In Education, the policies that intensify the formation of a bureaucratic school, the shrinking of Public Education with mergers and downgrading of school units continue».

On the day of the strike, public employees will march in the center of Athens and in other cities of the country. The “rendezvous” in the capital is set at 1:00 p.m. at Klathmonos Square.

Through the strike, public servants claim:

  • Real salary increases immediately.
  • Restoration of 13th and 14th salary.
  • Collective labor agreements.
  • Abolition of the 2% unemployment levy.
  • Unfreezing of the 2016-2017 biennium.
  • Tax-free at 12,000 euros.
  • Increase and extension of the hazardous and unhealthy work allowance without any cuts to it.
  • Supporting the NHS with generous funding. Health and safety measures in workplaces and schools.
  • Reduction of the number of students to 1:15 and an end to mergers of schools and departments.
  • Repeal of the Hatzidakis Law (Law 4808/21) and Law 5053/23 (Georgiadis) on labor matters, as well as repeal of all laws that privatize social security – Reinstatement of Law 1264/82.
  • Recruitment of permanent staff to cover the thousands of organizational gaps that exist in the State, especially in the fields of Health, Education, Social Security, etc.
  • At the same time, the workers say “no” to the privatization of public organizations and institutions.

Private teachers are also on strike

It is worth noting that participation in the 24-hour strike on November 20 has also been announced by private teachers through OIELE. In their relevant announcement, the private teachers emphasize that they are on strike with the main demands being the reinstatement of the collective bargaining regime in Tutoring Schools, Foreign Language Centers and SAEK (formerly IEK) and salary increases and the return of gifts to private schools.

As they explain in their text: “We are asking for brave increases and reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salary! Teachers must work with decent working conditions and pay, they must enter their classrooms with their heads held high and not impoverished and humiliated».
