A robot come personal trainer that assists those who train in the gym, prepares the card with the exercises, observes and corrects errors in real time, counts the repetitions and records the training data. The idea was this and the goal achieved: Pepper, presented in 2014 in Japan as the first humanoid robot capable of understanding and reacting to emotions, and previously used as an assistant in shops and airports, now he has also been trained as a coach. A group of engineers and designers from the Milan Polytechnic and Turin Polytechnic. And that team of students and recent graduates, average age 24, also created the start-up Gymnasio to create a more manageable and less expensive version, to be used to train at home in times of pandemic with closed gyms.

Our virtual coach can also be in a ten by ten cube, a high tech device that can be placed in a small room. And it will have a reduced cost. The challenge for us was also to “democratize” training, not everyone can afford a personal trainer, says Giuseppe Pastore, one of the seven students of the high school Polytechnic who developed the trainer robot project. The functions are the same programmed on Pepper who also became a trainer using Artificial Intelligence algorithms – they explain -. It recognizes you, opens your profile with the history of your workouts, observes you while you perform bodyweight exercises, models your posture, corrects and at the end gives you a card with the results. To develop this project we also involved graduates in physical education and personal trainers.

The group has created a new program for Pepper and it also changed its appearance: We integrated hardware components, adding a camera under the tablet fixed on the template and even a backpack to support the new card. Then the version for training at home: The project followed at the Polihub in Milan, the console will be on the market for next summer and will be more accessible, it will have a much lower cost than the robot conceived as a solution for gyms, before the pandemic. We used the same model and the virtual trainer will also come home.
