It’s coming to a head!
After three rounds of the Bundesliga, the cards are reshuffled, the division of points and the separation into champions and qualification groups make the teams concerned sweat whether they can still make it over or under the bottom line.
The winners of the 18th round were definitely Vienna Austria and TSV Hartberg, the losers of the teams fighting for the “dash” are WAC and WSG Tirol. The field of champions group contenders three laps before the end of the basic round pushed together again to three points.
The deserved 2-0 in St. Pölten let Austria coach Peter Stöger gratefully step in front of the camera. “It’s nice that we get another chance. We get there because we score a lot and become a little more stable,” said Stöger at “Sky” about the current championship group race, in which his team is one point behind on the tied teams WSG Tirol and TSV Hartberg in eighth place.
Stöger: “Good condition that we are still there”
One point can of course be made up for, but Stöger recalled a “demanding program in front of the chest”. For the violets, who took most of the teams between fifth and ninth place with 13 points in the spring, it is now the Vienna derby against Rapid. Further duels follow with Sturm and WAC, where Austria has to deliver if it wants to be “at the top”.
“We still have three strong opponents, but if we play like that we can beat anyone,” said offensive man Patrick Wimmer. “This is going to be even more exciting”, Stöger seemed a little surprised. “But that we are there three laps before the split is a good thing.”
WAC relaxed: “Have everything in hand”
This is also thanks to the surprising collapse of the fifth WAC against Altach (0: 1). “We left the preliminary decision behind, but we have everything in our hands,” emphasized a deeply relaxed coach Ferdinand Feldhofer, knowing that his team can take care of everything for the upcoming Ried guest game as well as “direct” duels with WSG Tirol and Austria .
That also applies to Wattens. The athletic relegated from the previous season, who is currently on the last place in the championship group, is facing a crisis in earnings. In the 1-1 draw against Admira, the Tyroleans, who played big in autumn, missed a win for the fifth time in a row. The WSG has well-known opponents in the finish, still meets Sturm, the WAC and Rapid.
Hartberg sniffs again, St. Pölten probably no longer
A contrary trend can be seen in Hartberg. Markus Schopp’s team surprised LASK (2: 1) and, thanks to their third win, drew level with the Tyroleans in the last four games. The Styrians can have realistic hopes for a new ticket for the “concert of the greats”, in addition to a Rapid guest performance, they also receive the Admira and St. Pölten.
It is quite possible that St. Pölten has already come to terms with the qualifying group in the final duel. The Lower Austrians have gradually lost sight of the upper half of the table and are ninth after their 2-0 draw against Austria, five points behind their desired goal. The result of ten-time goalscorer Alexander Schmidt, who has not scored in five games, said: “We lack the creativity with the ball that we have opportunities.”
Remaining program of the teams that still have a chance of the master group:
WAC (5th place / 27 pts.): Ried (a), Tirol (h), Austria (a)
WSG Tirol (6./25): Sturm (h), WAC (a), Rapid (h)
Hartberg (7./25): Admira (h), Rapid (a), St. Pölten (h)
Austria (8./24): Rapid (h), Sturm (a) WAC (h)
St. Pölten (9./20): Salzburg (a), Altach (h), Hartberg (a)
