Manuel Castellanos dominated the elite category with a time of 2:43.920 minutes on the first date of the 2024 National Downhill Championship, which took place this weekend at the El Espino Ecopark. About 25 athletes participated in the competition in the children’s, cadet, youth, pre-expert and elite categories.
Castellanos shared the podium with José Peña, who secured second place with a time of 2:46.547 minutes, and Mauricio Castaneda, who completed the descent in 2:47.321 and took third place.
For his part, André Monterrosa achieved a time of 02:57.144 minutes and won the pre-expert category. Second place went to Luis Castellanos with a time of 03:00.791, and in third place was Óscar Orellana, with 03:02.895.
In youth, the podium was occupied by José Herrera, who secured first position with a time of 03:04.711 minutes, Gabriel Cohen finished in second position, crossing the finish line with 03:13.026 and third place went to Fernando Mendoza with 03:25.504.
The cyclists competed on an 800-meter circuit, which they defined as very technical and with very steep slopes, narrow paths and different natural obstacles such as stones and roots.
“The nerves are always present here, it is an experience in which the adrenaline goes to the top and it is great. The circuit is demanding, it has its curves, its jumps and there are always new things, but we come with the mentality of winning,” said Carlos Choto, from the pre-expert category and who finished in fourth position with a time of 03:13.435.
The Salvadoran Cycling Federation confirmed that three dates of the National Downhill Championship are scheduled in a year in which they will organize the Pan American Championship of the specialty in September and in this same setting.
