Close Call at JFK Airport: Swiss Plane Almost Collides with Four Others on Runway

Dangerous conditions almost led to disaster on Wednesday at JFK Airport in New York. A plane from Switzerland was allowed to take off while four other planes were taxiing on the same runway.

The plane was cleared to take off from runway 4L and four other planes were cleared to cross it.

Swiss flight LX17 came close to disaster on Wednesday at JFK airport in New York. The plane was cleared to take off from runway 4L and four other planes were cleared to cross it.

Fortunately, the plane’s pilots reacted quickly and calmly. “Abandoning takeoff. Traffic on the runway,” the crew said while the plane was already accelerating, a video of the radio exchange on YouTube shows.

Switzerland confirmed the incident at 20 minutes and praised the professional response of his crew. This “quickly helped to avoid a potentially dangerous situation,” the airline said.

The cockpit crew regularly trains for such situations in simulators, said the Swiss. LX17 returned to the runway after the incident and took off six minutes later without further incident.

Last year, a similar incident occurred at the Portland Airport when two planes came dangerously close. The Federal Aviation Administration opened an investigation after this incident.
