The clog is very 1970s, at the time a faithful companion in student struggles and demonstrations. Now much loved even by stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and by many stylists who once again have included it among the must-have shoes of the season. Also called wooden clogs, from the Dutch folklore tradition, they really don’t seem to want to leave our wardrobes. Every year, revised in a fashion key, they are worn at the seaside, for walking in the city. And they also give a special touch to an office look.
History
Clogs, or clogs in English, saw their first appearance between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries in Holland, and soon spread to Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark. Their main feature, the resistance obtained from the materials with which they were made: wood, which protected farmers, workers and miners from impacts during work. In the 1920s, it became the perfect shoe for walks on the beach. In the mid-1950s, in Chicago, William M. Scholl, founder of the footwear company of the same name, created a new version of the clogs, maintaining the shoe’s symbolic material, wood, but revolutionizing the silhouette, which became more tapered and slightly raised in the front part. Since then the models have remained the same: open or closed, flat or with heels.
How to wear them
In perfect Seventies style, clogs, especially those with heels, are worn both with a floral patterned maxi dress and with wide trousers or denim shorts. With which bag? From the bucket to the straw basket.
The right fit
Convenient and comfortable, in order to have a correct fit, clogs must allow the heel to move up and down freely while walking. And it must not touch the edge, so never buy them “just right”.
