Clogged pouches are mostly a problem for the elderly – When they burst, they cause a life-threatening condition – 2024-04-20 06:28:30

Sealed bags are more the rule than the exception for the elderly.

Diverticula, or pouches in the large intestine, are quite common in the large intestine. The more the age, the more certain the person has a colic without knowing it.

Only about ten out of a hundred people under 40 years of age have individual bulges of the intestine, while people over 70 years of age have them in as many as 60 percent.

When several occlusions have developed in the large intestine, we speak of diverticulosis, i.e. intestinal occlusion disease. In appendicitis, bulges form in the colon wall through the weak muscle layer. The bags are born slowly over the years. The reason is apparently that the pressure inside the intestine bulges the weak point of the intestine outward.

A tendency to constipation and a low-fiber diet increase the pressure in the large intestine and thus also the formation of cysts.

Indigestion

Appendicitis may not be felt at all. In most people, it is completely symptom-free throughout their lives. About one in five people with appendicitis have symptoms.

They usually manifest as various disturbances in digestion, such as:

  • Irregular bowel movement
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain that worsens after eating and is relieved by bowel movement or flatulence.

It is good to note that the symptoms are often of the same type as in irritable bowel. Without research, it may be impossible to distinguish which problem it is.

About 25 percent of those suffering from appendicitis develop a sudden appendicitis, or diverticulitis.

Symptoms of appendicitis are:

  1. Pain in the lower abdomen that lasts for days, usually on the left side
  2. Heat or fever
  3. Loss of appetite
  4. Changes in bowel function

Rare, but life-threatening

The worst, but fortunately very rare additional disease is the rupture of an appendix. Then a pus colony can form in the abdominal cavity or it can lead to peritonitis that requires urgent treatment. Peritonitis is life-threatening and requires hospital treatment and often also emergency surgery.

During the operation, the diseased part of the intestine is removed, and depending on the severity of the situation, the patient may also have to have a stoma. The stoma can possibly be closed later in a new operation.

You can reduce the risk of appendicitis by eating a high-fiber diet, exercising, avoiding excess weight, and not smoking.
