Clinical Trials of Various Covid-19 Vaccines for Young Children, Some are Blood Clotting

TEMPO.CO, Bandung – Manufacturers Covid-19 vaccine is preparing a formula for immunization of children up to the age of toddlers. The preparation has even entered clinical trials.

“Children aged 3-11 years are still waiting for the results of the study to assess safety and dosage with an adequate number of subjects,” said Rodman Tarigan, lecturer at the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University Padjadjaran.

Quoted from his explanation on the Unpad website, Saturday, September 25, 2021, Rodman revealed that from various clinical trials of vaccines, some have produced efficacy. Other research has yet to be published, and clinical trials are still ongoing.

For vaccines Pfizer, said Rodman, has conducted phase III clinical trials in groups of children aged 12-15 years with 2,260 subjects. “The results of the clinical trial resulted in a vaccine efficacy of 100 percent,” said a pediatrician at the Central General Hospital, dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung.

Furthermore, Pfizer is continuing clinical trials for the 5–11 year age group. If the results are good, according to Rodman, clinical trials will be continued to a younger group, namely 2-5 years, and 6 months to 2 years.

Another vaccine currently conducting phase III clinical trials for the age group of 6 months to 12 years is Moderna. This clinical trial has a target of 6,000 subjects with three dosage formulations to be tested.

As for Sinovac, Rodman added, it has conducted phase I and II clinical trials at the age of 3-17 years. The results of clinical trials provide a fairly good and safe immune response. “Fever reactions at the age of 3-5 years and 6-11 years respectively 8.77 percent and 3.70 percent,” he said.

While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the only one seeking a vaccine to be injected into a group of newborns. However, the clinical trial was interrupted because of the issue of blood clots (blood clotting). This issue was also found in clinical trials of the Astrazeneca vaccine.

Rodman said, children are a group that is vulnerable to being exposed to Covid-19. This can be seen from the global Covid-19 data which shows that of the 8 people exposed to Covid-19, one percent are children.

Even though exposure to Covid-19 on child and adolescents mostly experience mild symptoms or even no symptoms, there are cases of children experiencing severe symptoms. “Severe symptoms usually occur in children with comorbidities,” he said.
