Erlangen (ddna) On Wednesday morning (March 29, 2023), climate activists attached a banner to the top of the chimney on the site of the Erlangen thermal power station. Around noon, the people ended the action and left the chimney accompanied by police and firefighters. The operations center of the Central Franconian police was informed around morning that three climate activists were gaining unauthorized access to the premises of the Erlangen thermal power station on Äußere Brucker Straße had. Two of the people climbed the approximately 140 meter high chimney and attached a several meter high banner with climate policy content to its outer wall. The police, fire brigade and rescue service were then on site with a total of around 70 emergency services. In addition to officers from the negotiation group and the special task force (SEK), the police also used a drone. During the operation, the officers from the negotiation group kept in constant contact with the activists. As part of this communication, they announced that they wanted to end their action in the midday hours. After the activists ignited pyrotechnics on the chimney around 12 p.m., emergency services entered the platform. The specially trained SEK officials and the Nuremberg fire brigade’s high-altitude rescue team roped down the two people safely down the inside of the chimney. The activists’ banner was also removed from the chimney in this context. During the operation, the police were in constant contact with those responsible for the thermal power station. At no time was the operation of the power plant impaired. The Erlangen Criminal Police Department carried out identification procedures for all three activists. In addition, the people have to answer criminally because of the suspicion of trespassing. The police headquarters in Middle Franconia is also examining the imposition of operational costs.
