The Administrative Court of Paris has given the reason to the environmental organizations this Wednesday and has attributed to the State the responsibility of the “failures” in climatic matters.
For the activists, who had filed a lawsuit against the Government, this is a “historic” sentence in the context of the fight against global warming. The judges have thus assessed whether there was any link between environmental damage and failure to introduce policies to combat climate change, according to the statement issued by the court.
Thus, they have decided that the State should be considered “responsible” for at least part of the damage caused. The court now has two months to decide what action to take, although the government could appeal the decision.
The ruling came after a group of several NGOs, including Notre Affaire a Tous, the Nicolás Hulot Foundation for Nature and Humanity, Greenpeace France and Oxfam France, filed a lawsuit in 2019 within the framework of the campaign called ‘The case of the century’.
“The judges have recognized the lack of action by the State in matters related to climate change is illegal,” the NGOs said in a statement before arguing that the Government is now facing unprecedented pressure to take action in this regard. .
Thus, they have emphasized that the court “must now decide whether or not to order the Government to take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and comply with its commitments on climate issues.”
