Climate summit: dozens of countries pledge to close coal-fired power stations

Canada, Poland, Ukraine, Vietnam and Chile, among others, have agreed. It is still unclear whether the Netherlands has also promised to stop building coal-fired power stations.

US and China not

In a statement, the British government writes that some of those countries are putting an end to all investments in coal-fired power stations both at home and abroad. According to the plan, major economies would no longer be dependent on coal by 2030, the rest of the world will follow in 2040.

Coal-fired power plants are one of the biggest contributors to climate change. The British newspaper The Guardian reports that Australia, China, India and the United States did not agree with the plan while these countries are major consumers of coal. Critics say the plans are coming too late and not enough countries are cooperating.

Incidentally, it has become clear that CO2 emissions, mainly caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, will return to pre-coronavirus levels this year. Scientists from the Global Carbon Project for world leaders announced this at the climate summit.

Rise harder

Overall, global CO2 emissions will be just below the 2019 record, according to the calculations presented. Emissions of gas and polluting coal will rise faster this year than they fell in corona year 2020, the scientists say.

China is currently responsible for a third of all CO2 emitted worldwide.
