United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told world leaders during Climate Summit 28 Friday, the burning of fossil fuels must stop immediately and reducing their use will not be enough to stop global warming.
“We cannot save a burning planet with a hose of fossil fuels,” Guterres said in a speech to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.
He continued, “We will not reach the 1.5 degree limit (of temperature rise) unless we eventually stop burning fossil fuels. Not reduce or decrease them.”
He called on fossil fuel companies to invest in the transition to renewable energy sources and asked governments to help by imposing this change in ways that include imposing exceptional taxes on sector profits.
“I call on governments to help the sector make the right decision through regulators and legislation… and end fossil fuel subsidies and impose exceptional taxes on profits,” he said.
