Her new movie “Chaos Walking”, climate protection and psychic abilities – the British actress Daisy Ridley in conversation.

Interview: Patrick Heidmann

Daisy Ridley’s acting experience was manageable when she got the role as the new Star Wars heroine Rey. For three films she fought her way through distant galaxies and became a world star. She was also in front of the camera for the Agatha Christie film “Murder on the Orient Express”. She has been in a relationship with her colleague Tom Bateman since filming. Now the 29-year-old from London can also be seen alongside Tom Holland in the science fiction film “Chaos Walking”, which starts in cinemas today. The “Luxemburger Wort” reached the actress by phone.

Daisy Ridley, you became famous as Rey in the “Star Wars” films, now you play again a loner without a family in “Chaos Walking” who becomes an action heroine in the struggle for survival. You won’t have missed the parallels, right?

When I first read the script, I didn’t really think about it. I found Viola in “Chaos Walking” simply admirably brave because she leaves everything behind to hopefully start a new life on a strange planet. I don’t think I would be able to do that myself. I found the role correspondingly appealing. It wasn’t until later that I noticed that there are quite a few parallels to Rey. But I think they are ultimately limited, after all, Viola quickly finds a companion in Todd.

Are you looking specifically among the offers for roles that you also require physically?

I would not go so far. But I definitely enjoy this aspect of the work, that is. When working on the last “Star Wars” film, for example, I trained a lot of kickboxing with a trainer and even got the green belt. It was a really big deal for me because I loved that I had something to show after all my hard work. For “Walking Chaos” I learned to ride a motorcycle, which I thought was pretty cool. And we were out in nature a lot. Otherwise, I was a bit amazed at how much I had to run for the role. I hadn’t really expected that after reading the script.

Speaking of nature: where were the outdoor shots taken?

We shot what didn’t come from the computer near a small town near Montreal. There were not only wonderful lush green forests, but above all some rapids where we could shoot all water scenes. Other scenes were then shot in the studio in Montreal itself, which is one of the coolest cities I’ve ever been to.

Sweden’s export hit Alicia Vikander speaks in an interview about her new film “The Green Knight” and her attitude towards environmental protection.

Have you missed traveling a lot in the past few months?

Actually, I didn’t think it was so wrong that we were all forced to stay at home and not fly around the world all the time without batting an eyelid. Climate protection is very important to me, I drive an electric car and I think it’s really important that everyone has an eye on their CO2 emissions. From this perspective, it was pretty good to see that a few less flights are possible. At the same time, of course, at some point I got wanderlust because I love to discover new regions where the culture is alien to me and I don’t speak the language. A map of the world hangs on my wall, and I actually use pins to mark the places I’ve been to. I consider it a great honor that my job has allowed me to travel to a wide variety of countries, from Jordan to Japan.

The topic of climate protection is obvious in a dystopian film like “Chaos Walking”. How do you look to the future, optimistic or worried?

I try not to be overly pessimistic, even though there are sometimes days when I think humanity is dead. But deep in my heart I actually believe in the good in us and am therefore hopeful that we can achieve a lot together. We currently live in a time in which the evil and destructive voices often seem to be particularly loud or are perceived. However, there are also people like Greta Thunberg at the same time. It is unbelievable what they and many of their contemporaries can achieve, especially when it comes to protecting the climate and the environment. When I look at British politics like that, there are times when I just want to never get out of bed. But activists like Greta give me hope.

Are you sometimes angry with the generation of your parents, who have contributed a lot to the current state of the world?

No, accusations of this kind do not get anyone any further. In addition, no one has made a conscious decision to ruin our environment for posterity. It is more the case that perspectives change, we collect new experiences and information and therefore some things shift. Plastic used to be new and very helpful, for example to keep things fresher for longer. Today we know that we have exaggerated it a little and that it cannot be good when mountains of plastic waste are even on the top of Mount Everest. But certain insights are only gained afterwards.

In the world of “Chaos Walking” men can hear the thoughts of their fellow human beings. That could be quite helpful in real life sometimes, right?

On the contrary. I think that would be a disaster. Interpersonal relationships live from the fact that you can communicate using other than words. And being able to decide for yourself what you want to share with other people and what not is an important privilege. It is also important to be able to read body language, facial expressions and other elements of non-verbal communication. At least I’m apparently really good at it.

In an interview, the US actress speaks about her new film project, the fight for transsexual rights and hate on the Internet.

Oh yes?

Some people have already called me a witch because I register so much that has not been said. My proverbial sixth sense seems real strong.

Finally, a quick question: What is the truth of the rumor that you will soon be making a film with the German actress Nina Hoss?

Hopefully that will actually happen soon. An exciting and complex story about three women at the end of the war in Germany in 1945 … I only saw Christian Petzold’s film “Phoenix” last year, in which Nina Hoss plays the leading role. Wow, that really got me excited. I recently emailed her and Kristin Scott-Thomas, who will also be in the film, because I’m so excited and excited to be working with them. I’m really looking forward to my work, but I’m pretty nervous. Because the two are not only incredibly good, but also so experienced that I have to assert myself as a chick.
