Climate of Fear and Persecution: Threatening Letters, Destruction, and Burglary Escalate Tensions in Rural Community

Crisis ⁢Deepens⁣ in Montfaucon ‍JU: Vandalism,⁤ Threats, adn Resignation Rock the Community

The picturesque municipality of Montfaucon JU, nestled in the canton of Jura, is grappling with ⁤an escalating crisis. Mayor Xavier Cleven has reported a surge ‍in ⁣vandalism, anonymous threats, ⁣and a campaign targeting municipal authorities. The situation worsened with the resignation of a‍ long-standing official, further destabilizing the community. ⁤

A Wave ⁤of Intimidation ⁣and destruction

Recent months have seen a series of alarming incidents‌ in Montfaucon. Citizens have received anonymous threatening letters,⁢ property damage ⁤has been widespread, and there was even an ⁤attempted break-in at the parish hall, as reported by the Jurassian⁢ daily.

At a recent municipal assembly, Mayor ⁣Cleven painted a grim picture.⁣ “It doesn’t get any ⁤better, but ⁢worse,” he stated. While past attacks where primarily directed at authorities, the intimidation has now extended to ordinary citizens. The community has been forced to take ⁤legal action to address the growing unrest.

A Call for Dialog⁤ Amidst Suspicion

The motives behind these incidents remain unclear. Mayor cleven emphasized⁤ that the authorities are open to dialogue to ease‍ tensions. However, he suspects that some individuals are attempting to pressure the local council‌ into resigning.

“We are open to a dialogue. Some⁢ people want to harm us and‌ perhaps shake‌ the local council so that we ‌can step back. But that won’t be the case. It woudl be an admission of weakness to withdraw,” Cleven asserted.

Resignation Adds⁣ to the Turmoil

The crisis deepened with the‌ resignation of Denis Farine, the‍ vice‌ president of the municipal assembly. In his farewell letter, Farine cited⁤ a “climate of fear and persecution” as the reason ‌for⁣ his departure.

“This is a drama for our community,” cleven lamented. Farine, a lifelong resident and dedicated community member, had been a pillar of support ⁢for the village. “If people who have never caused‌ problems and just wanted to help were forced ‍to ⁣go,⁣ it is scandalous,” the mayor added.

Limited Intervention from the Canton

Despite the escalating tensions, ⁢the cantonal government‌ has refrained from ‍direct intervention. Christophe Riat, the Délégué for municipal⁤ affairs, explained ‌that the‍ canton can only act in cases of legal or administrative irregularities. The issues in Montfaucon, though, are of ⁤a political and criminal nature, ⁤placing them outside ⁢the canton’s jurisdiction.

A Unanimous Decision Amidst Chaos ‍

Despite the turmoil, the municipal assembly ⁤managed to reach a unanimous decision at the end of their meeting.⁢ The 2025 budget was approved, even with a ⁣projected deficit of over 23,000 francs.⁢
