Germany’s new Finance Minister Jörg Kukies has now been in office for almost two days. However, he apparently does not only plan to carry out ministry duties in the short term. On Friday, Scholz’s confidant met with his French counterpart Antoine Armand. He exchanged ideas with him on fundamental topics. The focus was particularly on realigning the European economy towards digital and climate-neutral action.
The Federal Ministry of Finance also pointed out the encounter via X. Kukies therefore declared: “We are more than ever at a turning point in Europe.” Now decisive decisions must be made for the future of the continent. “We have to realign our economy: towards modern, digital and climate-neutral action,” said the new finance minister. Kukies wants to continue where the previous traffic light coalition left off. He obviously does not interpret his role as finance minister as a position that was only given to him on a temporary basis.
Kukies already served as State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance during Olaf Scholz’s term as Federal Finance Minister. In this position, he is said to have played a crucial role shortly before the spectacular collapse of the scandal-ridden company Wirecard. According to reports from the Mirrors From 2021, Kukies was significantly involved in efforts to save Wirecard from impending bankruptcy – with funds from the state treasury. Confidential emails show that Kukies wanted to save Wirecard from collapse with a loan from Ipex.
Kukies is also a long-time member of the SPD. The current Federal Finance Minister was already chairman of the Jusos in Rhineland-Palatinate in the early 1990s. His successor was to be the future Labor Minister and SPD leader Andrea Nahles. According to his own statements, he is also committed to projects to support and integrate refugees.
