When milk heats entire districts
badenovaWARMPLUS opens energy center at Schwarzwaldmilch. Industrial waste heat is used to provide climate-neutral heat to 3,500 people in the south of Freiburg.
Freiburg, 14.11.23 – The decarbonization of the heat supply in Freiburg is making great strides. The badenova daughter badenovaWÄRMEPLUS today inaugurated a new energy center on the premises of Schwarzwaldmilch GmbH Freiburg. The aim of the joint project is to further use the waste heat generated during the production of dairy products and feed it into the district heating network. Around 3,500 people in the south of Freiburg are supplied with climate-neutral heat.
“The collaboration between the two companies shows how change can succeed,” said Martin Horn, Mayor of the City of Freiburg. “In order to master the energy and heat transition locally, concrete projects and innovative ideas are needed. This also includes this cooperation across company boundaries, which will take us a step further along the common path to climate neutrality.”
“As a regional energy supplier, we have set ourselves clear goals: badenova should be climate-neutral by 2035, the same applies to heat supply,” says Heinz-Werner Hölscher, board member of badenova. “We want to produce one terawatt hour of green heat per year by 2035. The new energy center at Schwarzwaldmilch is an important milestone in this regard.”
The badenovaWÄRMEPLUS investment project is one of a total of seven construction phases in the WÄRMVERBUND – FREIBURG-SÜD. The transformation to a 4th generation heating network will take place by merging several heating networks and decentralized energy systems by 2025.
The new energy center creates the possibility of feeding up to 4.38 MW of industrial waste heat, which previously remained unused, into the existing heat network all year round, thus saving around 3,000 tons of CO2 per year.
“In the spirit of our holistic understanding of sustainability, with this project we show that an innovatively operated production site in the middle of the city can be an important driver for climate protection and the inner-city energy transition,” explains Andreas Schneider, Managing Director of Schwarzwaldmilch.
The technically demanding process for integrating low-temperature waste heat (here around 30 degrees Celsius) involves increasing the temperature level from cold production and the Schwarzwaldmilch’s operational wastewater to supply heat to the Haslach, Vauban and Stühlinger districts. The recooling heat from the cooling process and the heat extracted from the wastewater are heated to up to 85 C° using additional heat pumps, while at the same time ensuring the ecological and safe process steam and cold supply to the Schwarzwaldmilch. The new energy center makes a significant contribution to the local heating transition in the city of Freiburg.
