The Covid-19 epidemic has not relegated climate and environmental problems to the background. On the contrary, she reiterated the urgency of jointly seeking sustainable solutions to preserve the future of the planet and effectively protect populations, in particular from diseases transmitted from animals to humans.
Faced with these global challenges, France is mobilized more than ever and is working to strengthen climate multilateralism. On December 12, 2020, several events will celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and remind us of the need for an absolute commitment from all in the face of global warming.

The “summit of ambition for the climate”
On December 12, 2020, from 3 p.m., France is co-organizing the “Climate Ambition Summit” with the United Kingdom (president of COP 26) and the United Nations General Secretariat, in partnership with Chile (president of COP 25) and Italy (host of pre-COP 26).
All the states signatories to the Paris Agreement have been invited. Only those able to make a meaningful announcement on one or more of the three pillars of the Paris Agreement (mitigation, adaptation and finance) will be able to speak. This virtual summit will launch the cycle of raising ambition that will continue until COP 26 to be held from November 1 to 12, 2021 in Glasgow. Non-state actors will also be invited to speak.
All information, as well as the live broadcast from the summit, is available on the site https://climateambitionsummit2020.org.
Relaunch the international dynamic born thanks to the Paris Agreement
Adopted in 2015, the Paris climate agreement is the global framework for action against global warming. An agreement ratified the fastest in history, it is almost universal (194 signatures and 189 ratifications) and constitutes a shared and essential roadmap for effectively and collectively fighting climate disruption.
In order for it to be fully implemented and produce the expected effects, all States Parties must raise their climate ambition, as quickly as possible and by COP 26 in 2021.
Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) submitted in 2015 ahead of COP 21, even fully implemented, are currently leading to global warming of more than 3 ° C, i.e. far from the objectives of the ‘agreement (+ 1.5-2 ° C). Because of the Covid-19 crisis, the call for heightened ambitions in the fight against global warming is difficult to be heard.
The international community therefore has a year before COP 26 to re-mobilize all stakeholders and regain the momentum that prevailed when the Paris Agreement was adopted, when 183 countries had submitted their NDCs, thus covering 95% of emissions from greenhouse gases globally.

Celebrate the anniversary of the Paris Agreement in the diplomatic network
The entire French diplomatic network will put climate at the heart of the collective agenda on the occasion of this anniversary, in partnership with the local representations of the European Union and all the partners involved in these issues.
These celebrations will be translated into all kinds of events: webinars, press conferences, meetings with local actors, screenings or exhibitions.
The ministry has thus chosen to join forces with the Art of Change 21 association to produce an artistic Maskbook video which mobilizes in an original way personalities from around the world for the climate.
Discover the video on our social networks on December 12, 2020.
