Climate crisis – Rising sea levels in the US state of Virginia threaten “cradle of the USA”

The town is currently complaining about a flood of the century: the water is about a meter above the normal level. Sea levels in the region have risen by around 45 centimeters since 1927. Archaeologists are trying to protect the historical excavation sites with sandbags, tarpaulins and a reinforced dam.

In early May, Jamestown was listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the 11 most threatened historic sites in the United States. The organization assumes that there are still about five years left to take adequate protective measures and to allow the excavations in Jamestown to continue.
