It is such a major clear cut that rarely occurs in the Zurich Forest. On the Hönggerberg, all trees have been felled on an area of 1.3 hectares. In the service of science, because this is where the forest of the future is being created. The area is in the area of the Zurich Forest Laboratory. It was founded two years ago to research different aspects of the forest.
“We are standing here in the midst of Zerr oaks,” says Kathrin Streit. Together with Peter Brang, she heads the “Test Planting” project at the Federal Research Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape (WSL), and what she says seems strange. In two ways: We don’t see trees. And there are no distorted oaks with us.
